Black Lab Linux is a free software Linux distribution for x86 and x86-64 hardware. It was first released in November 2013 by PC/OpenSystems LLC. Black Lab Linux is based on Ubuntu Linux tailored both for general desktop use and for the more technical user. It is commercially made available by PC/OpenSystems LLC for business desktops, education facilities, as well as parallel computing. Formerly known as OS/4, the product was renamed by Roberto J Dohnert and the software team to Black Lab Linux after the USPTO denied his trademark application for OS/4. PC/OpenSystems LLC had acquired the rights to the name Black Lab Linux in 2008 after the acquisition of Terrasoft Solutions by Fixstars. In its current incarnation, Black Lab Linux does not share any code or platform similarities with Terrasoft Solutions's product called Black Lab Linux as Terrasoft Solutions's release was for the PowerPC Processor. Fixstars Linux's products, Yellow Dog Linux and Y-HPC, are currently developed under the Yellow Dog Linux brand.
NB:- Latest stable version of the software will be delivered.

This Black Lab release moves from the previous 14.04 LTS base to the newer 16.04 LTS base. A major difference in this version is in the inclusion of available desktop environments. Currently, we are the only major Linux distributor outside of Ubuntu that ships Unity as an option. In addition: the KDE Plasma 5 desktop, LXDE for older/legacy hardware, GNOME 3.18. Xfce is included on the GNOME ISO and GNOME Flashback session is available within Unity."

The Black Lab project has released its first service release to Black Lab Linux 6.5. The new service release completes the project's migrating to using one standard desktop environment (KDE), but the project reports community members are working on alternative spins, including a spin for the legacy CDE desktop. "Black Lab Linux 6.5 SR1 is the first service release of the free release of our distribution. This included all security and bug fixes from our initial release until May 6, 2015 which includes several important bug fixes. Along with security fixes Black Lab Linux 6.5 SR1 completes our transition to one standard desktop, KDE. Black Lab Linux 6.5 SR1 will not have separate ISOs of the different desktops but you can download and install alternative desktop environments from the repositories. Re-spins: We have community members who will be producing re-spins of Black Lab Linux with Xfce, MATE and we have one working on a CDE re-spin."
The Black Lab Linux project has announced an update to the distribution's Professional Desktop edition. "Today we are pleased to announce the release of Black Lab Professional Desktop 6.0 Service Release 3 or SR3. Black Lab Pro Desktop 6.0 SR3 is a major upgrade to our pro desktop line of distributions. With this release we worked on a few issues with memory consumption, security and speed. With the Black Lab Pro Desktop we deliver it in two different desktops, KDE and GNOME Shell . While these are commercial releases we do offer a cut down version of it available for download from our website. While we do not release for download all of the features of the retail release it is far from being crippled. The KDE release boots only consuming 480MB of RAM and the GNOME Shell release boots using only 545MB of RAM."
